Nesting Part 1

Nesting is no joke, people.  I always respected that pregnant women will "nest" to get ready for baby, but I had no idea how consuming it is.  At least it is for me!  Especially as we get closer to the due date (40 more days!), I have really felt the need to get our house in order and completely organized before baby arrives.

Our "office" has been a disaster area for the majority of time we've lived here.  Before my mom came to visit back in late March, I had at least gotten our filing organized and loose papers put away.  But there was no rhyme or reason to where stuff was and was kind of like "oh, here's a space!  I'll put that here."   Then when we had all of the work done inside of the house, we put everything we could into the office - furniture, lamps, curtains, etc.  PLUS I was storing all of my classroom bins in here as well (full of lesson plans, education books, my classroom library, posters, etc).  You couldn't even walk in the room, just kind of peek inside and say "Oh yeah, that's where we put that.  Won't be able to get it for another month."

This has definitely been my biggest "nesting" project I've been working on.  I started it in early August, then we went on vacation, and for the past two weeks I've been chipping away at it a little each day.  Saturday I finally found homes for the rest of the random stuff lying on the floor and I am so happy with the results.  Check it out!

The built-in bookcases are adjustable (similar to IKEA bookcases).  When we first moved in, all of the shelves were asymmetrically placed.  I just stuck books here and there and went with it.  Once I had the time, I changed the shelves so they were alike, and even hung some of our little framed art and plates up.

Justin's desk was covered with stuff - so he is super happy to have a clean work area now.  By the way,  he has been moving that lava lamp around with him since 7th grade.  It still works too!  As far as "bachelor" decor goes, it's probably the least offensive thing I can think of.  And yes, that is us painted as a Warhol/pop art.  One of Justin's first Valentine's gifts to me.  :)  Since Justin is Tom Petty's doppleganger, Tom also hangs in his rightful place on Justin's side.

And now for my side!  I have plenty of room for the iMac and some counter space for crafting too.  Justin is going to build a little shelf under my keyboard sliding tray so that we can mount the power strip and tackle all of those cords showing under my desk.

Another view - and my Beatles posters that I have been moving around middle school as well.

And now for my proudest achievement in this room - the closet.  Completely organized.  Totally labeled.  Absolute organization heaven.  I will say this for our house, if you organize the closets well, you can fit a ton of stuff inside of them!  I have all of our holiday decorations, the majority of my craft supplies, all of my classroom supplies, extra framed prints/art that we don't have a place for right now, winter coats, suits, my wedding dress, wrapping supplies, office supplies . . . you get the drift.  And I even have that space to the left of the big plastic crates for guests to hang clothes if anyone is sleeping on the air mattress in here.
A close up of the top shelf:
I didn't get fancy with the labels for a few reasons.
1. I didn't feel like messing with the printer.
2. I have a ton of craft paper so might as well use it.
3. I like my own handwriting.
4. I don't own a label maker.  (gasp!)  It would be a perfect Christmas gift though - hint, hint!

Another close up:

On the built-ins to the left of my desk space, I carved out room for some of my smaller craft supplies, along with all of my crafting tomes.  I labeled the sewing box so that Justin knew what that was and could easily grab it if I told him to.  Eventually I want to get pretty bins for the bottom four shelves, but for now, a random basket, a Coach shoe box, and a Lindsey Phillips shoe box will do.  I'm also thinking about spray painting the lids of the plastic bins up top a prettier color.

And to the right of my desk space, I have slots labeled and a filing tray to put stuff in that Justin needs to look at.

As you can see, this was a huge undertaking.  And this isn't the only thing I've been organizing.  As the post is titled "Nesting Part 1", there will be more nesting posts to come!
